We’re excited to announce effective February 1, Learning Machine became part of Hyland, the leading provider of content platforms for higher education, healthcare, financial services, insurance, and government.
The Learning Machine journey began back in 2016, when we worked with the MIT Media Lab to develop and release Blockcerts.org, the first open-source codebase to issue, hold, and verify digital records using blockchain-based verification. In 2017, Learning Machine went on to develop a commercial software-as-a-service (SaaS) product which made it easy to design, issue, and manage these digital credentials within a friendly interface. That product has been used by customers located around the world, including North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific.
As we grow our worldwide customer base, we continued advocating for open standards by actively participating in the W3C standards group overseeing the development of Verifiable Credentials, released early in 2019. This a landmark achievement that other companies and governments are now adopting, which is critical for achieving the interoperability everyone desires.

Questions and Answers
What does this mean for my organization?
Existing customers will not see their service impacted in any way. Your Account Delivery Lead and support channels all remain in place, and feature development will continue as planned to continue building a robust system for issuing digital credentials. While we look forward to integration with Hyland’s suite of end-to-end content services, continuity of your existing service is our first priority.
What does this mean for our organization’s previously issued Blockcerts? Do we need to communicate anything to our recipients?
Your organization’s issued Blockcerts are not affected in any way. All issued credentials remain co-owned by recipients and your organization, as well as independently verifiable. Hosted credentials reside on your organization’s domain, and your account configuration (email, verification portals, etc.) are not changing. Because recipients aren’t impacted in any way, no special communication is required.
Will your technology values or mission change as part of Hyland?
Our mission to replace paper with digital credentials that can be understood and verified anywhere hasn’t changed. This mission is primarily supported by our commitment to open data standards. We continue to align our technology with the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C’s) global standard for Verifiable Credentials and Decentralized Identifiers, as well as with other groups that create and maintain open standards for specific industries.
Will the roadmap or timeline for upcoming features be changed?
Plans for 2020 have not changed. Blockcerts 3.0, alignment with the W3C, is still planned for release this summer. We will also be developing new product features such as recipient profiles, improved dashboards, more issuing options, and a variety of usability improvements. In addition, we plan to develop more APIs that can be used to improve systems integration and better automate the issuance of credentials. These APIs will also contribute to integrating with Hyland’s platform offerings.
